BuCor Joins Launch of United Nations Day 2025, Celebrating 80 Years of UN Presence in the Philippines

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) joined the launching of the United Nations (UN) Day 2025 Celebrations on 13 October 2025, at the SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City. This year’s celebration marks the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations’ presence in the Philippines and highlights its continuing work in promoting peace, justice, and sustainable development.
Representing the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) was Ms. JORDINE ROSE R. OCON, CrFA, MPS, Chief of the Strategic Communications Office (SCO). Her participation in the momentous event and engagement with UN personalities highlight the Bureau’s commitment to supporting initiatives that align with global standards on human rights, reformation, and good governance.
Also present at the event were UN Philippines Resident Coordinator ARNAUD PERAL, SM Supermalls President STEVEN TAN, and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Assistant Secretary MARIA TERESA T. ALMOJUELA, who each expressed support for the United Nations’ mission and its enduring partnership with the Philippine government and the private sector.
Part of the program was a photo exhibition showcasing the broad and impactful work of the UN in the Philippines over the past eight decades. Among the featured images was a photograph of a 70-year-old former Person Deprived of Liberty (PDL) together with two UN personnel. The former PDL was released under a United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)-proposed government initiative aimed at easing prison overcrowding. The inclusion of this image highlights the shared advocacy between the BuCor and UNODC in advancing humane correctional practices and social reintegration programs.
One of the highlights of the event was the Mall of Asia Globe lighting ceremony, symbolizing global unity and the strong partnership between the Philippines and the UN. The Bureau’s presence at this event reflects its continuing efforts to collaborate with international organizations to support its mandate of safekeeping and reforming PDLs.
