On, January 7, 2025, a significant milestone for the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) unfolded as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints formally turned over essential school necessities to the institution’s Education and Training Program.
The donation included desktops, laptops, writing pads, notebooks, pens, monoblock armchairs, teachers’ tables, bookshelves, bond papers, floor fans, and a room partition for the schoolhouse. This initiative, facilitated by the church’s humanitarian services, underscores its commitment to uplifting communities through education and training.
The project began on August 18, 2023, when the organization visited CIW to assess the needs of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs). Following months of collaboration, on August 15, 2024, the church confirmed its support, agreeing to provide building supplies, digital tools, and learning materials.
The turnover ceremony was attended by key representatives from the church, including Mr. Noel Delos Reyes Placer, Mr. Jesus James Bulan Ledesma, and Daniel Doctora Custodio, among others. CIW officials, led by C/SSUPT MARITES L EBARDO, joined the event to receive the donations.
The program commenced with an opening prayer and the Philippine National Anthem, followed by remarks from Mr. Placer, who expressed the organization’s dedication to supporting education. The Dance Club and Guitar Lesson Class performed musical numbers, and a video presentation showcased the project’s journey.
C/SSUPT EBARDO extended her heartfelt gratitude, emphasizing how the donations would bridge knowledge gaps and equip PDL with skills for reintegration into society. She highlighted the transformative potential of the materials in enhancing literacy, vocational skills, and character development.
To conclude the event, CIW presented tokens of appreciation to the church representatives as a gesture of gratitude. The ceremony ended with a ribbon-cutting led by C/SSUPT EBARDO at the new schoolhouse, showcasing the completed room partition and donated items.
This partnership stands as a testament to the power of collective effort in fostering hope and opportunity for those in need. The CIW, headed by CT/SUPT MARJORIE ANN P SANIDAD, MD, RN, FIAMS, expresses heartfelt gratitude for the donations, which bring the institution closer to fulfilling its reformation mandates by equipping PDLs with tools for education and personal growth.
