2nd Day of the 29th NCCW Celebration

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) continuously make wave for the second day celebration of the 29th NCCW as the day started with an energetic and blastful “Fun Run – Run for a Cause” and “Zumba”. Both activities aimed to generate funds for the feeding program intended for the Person Deprived of Liberty (PDL) at the Minimum Security Compound (MinSeCom) and Reception Diagnostic Center (RDC).

The participants were composed of BuCor personnel, spearheaded by C/CINSP LUCIO C GUEVARRA, Acting Director, CNTI; and other key officers, COL BERNARDO OÑA PA (Ret.), CT/CSUPT MARIA FE R MARQUEZ, MNSA; C/CSUPT CELSO S BRAVO; CT/SUPT NOEL M MARQUEZ, DVM, DPA; CT/ SUPT CYNTHIA N ANDRADA, PHD, RPsy, RGC, CT/CINSP MARJORIE ANN P SANIDAD, MD, FIAMS; CT/SUPT DOROTHY C BERNABE, MAED; C/SUPT MARITES D LUCEÑO; C/CINSP ROGER O BONCALES; CT/SINSP CARMENCITA B BRAVO; C/SINSP MARLON E MANGUBAT and CT/INSP STELLA MAY C LAT. They were all gathered at the Administrative Building to join the said activity. They breathlessly run from the Admin Building as they headed to Gate 2, passed the area of Ina Ng Awa Church, proceeded to Vicar then they turned right after Quarry. Following the agreed route, they proceeded to Type B, passed through the area of CNTI, QFB, Gate 3, and Supply Building then went back to the starting/ finish line.

Right after, danceable tunes were heard in the air that signaled the start of Zumba. Personnel excitedly formed at the façade of the Admin Building and danced to the beat as the Zumba instructor led them to a powerful dance workout to burn the visceral fats away.

The term Fun-run was first coined in the 1970’s and was used to describe an event where people ran a prescribed distance to raise money for a particular charity. Apart from its fund-raising nature, the other main feature of a fun run is that it is supposed to be non-competitive.

On the other hand, Zumba was created by the choreographer and fitness Instructor Alberto Perez in the mid-1990. Following its rising popularity in several continents during its early years, Zumba was first introduced in the Philippines in 2011 through Emma Satchell who has been dubbed as the country’s Zumba Queen.

“Fun Run” and “Zumba” promotes physical and mental well being and doing these activities aims to encourage men and women of BuCor to shape up to “feel good and look good”. Further, it wards of anxieties and for some, dissipates depression. It is a must to maintain an active lifestyle to boost good health by regularly exercising even at home anytime. Simple and basic workout can likewise be performed in the office while working to activate the minds.

The said activities were followed by a PWD Registration conducted at the MinSeCom spearheaded by Ms. Susana Clave Cañete, Ms. Joanna Marie Espejon and Mr. Lawrence Joven Tenerio, Persons Disability Affairs Office, (PDAO) personnel from the City Government of Muntinlupa. Out of sixty-four (64) PDL, fifty-five (55) PDL availed of the said registration and they were overjoyed knowing that there are people who still cares and concerned about their welfare.

The purpose of the activity was to conduct registration for eligible PDL and conduct disability awareness & sensitivity information drive. CT/SSUPT MA CECILIA V VILLANUEVA, MD, CPRO, Director, Directorate for Health and Services & Chief, Medical Division graced the event and assisted the PDAO representatives along with C/INSP JOEVI VALENZUELA JR, Chief, Infirmary MinSeCom, who all gave meaningful pep talk to inform and enlighten the PDL, purposely to erase any cloud of doubts pertaining to their current conditions and situations.

The team was warmly welcomed and accommodated by C/SINSP EUSEBIO B DEL ROSARIO JR, MPA, Camp Commander, MinSeCom and his other officials and personnel.

NCCW celebration is an annual event organized by the Bureau of Corrections in accordance with Proclamation No. 551 issued by then President Fidel V Ramos to raise public awareness about the transformation of PDL. The week-long event covering from October 23 to 27 includes a variety of activities that highlight various reformation programs to raise public awareness that the PDL though incarcerated can still be productive. The skills they learned inside will be their tool to make a difference once freed and re-integrated into the mainstream society.

This was made possible through the leadership of GENERAL GREGORIO PIO P CATAPANG JR, AFP (Ret), CESE who continuously supports and reforms the agency for the welfare of our clientele, the PDL.
