CIW PDL and Personnel Enhance Disaster Preparedness Skills in Mandaluyong

The Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong recently hosted a disaster preparedness training for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) and CIW personnel in collaboration with the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) Mandaluyong. The training took place on September 4 and 5, 2023, for PDL participants, followed by a session for personnel on September 13, 2023.

The primary aim of this comprehensive training program was to equip all participants with the essential knowledge and skills required to effectively respond to and manage disasters, emergencies, and crises. The training focused on enhancing preparedness, response capabilities, and coordination among the CIW community during times of crisis.

Throughout the sessions, numerous vital topics were discussed, including the CDRRMO law, earthquake preparedness, flood response, typhoon management, and the assessment of Mandaluyong City’s vulnerability to various disaster scenarios. Participants also received hands-on training in bandaging and rescue techniques and essential life support with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

In her address, C/SINSP ELSA MARTORILLAS, Deputy Superintendent, emphasized that Disaster Preparedness Training covers more than mere disaster response. It encompasses developing resilience, preserving lives, and facilitating swift recovery for affected communities in the event of a disaster. Such abilities benefit the CIW community and contribute to Mandaluyong City’s safety and well-being.

C/SSUPT DAISY SEVILLA-CASTILLOTE, Acting Superintendent of the CIW, was the driving force behind the endeavor as she understands the value of such training for the CIW and the city’s disaster preparedness plan.

The collaboration between CIW and CDRRMO Mandaluyong is a testament to both organizations’ commitment of ensuring their community members’ safety and preparedness. Investing in disaster preparedness and response training, the CIW and CDRRMO Mandaluyong set an example for other institutions and communities, highlighting the importance of proactive measures in safeguarding lives and property during adversity.
