TODAY | Assistant Secretary JOSE DOMINIC F. CLAVANO IV of the Department of Justice (DOJ) conducted an ocular inspection at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Poblacion, Muntinlupa City to capture photos and footage of the congested prison. These visuals will be presented during the upcoming National Jail Decongestion Summit on December 6 – 7, 2023, organized by the Supreme Court (SC), the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
The NBP has long been plagued by severe overcrowding and issues concerning the well-being of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL). The current population exceeds the prison’s capacity, resulting in cramped living conditions, inadequate facilities, and limited access to essential services. This dire situation has necessitated concerted efforts by the government to address the issue and initiate comprehensive reforms. As the Jail Decongestion Summit approaches, the focus on addressing overcrowding and improving prison conditions gains momentum, promising a more equitable and just corrections system for all.
