Basic Firefighting and Earthquake Drill at Correctional Institution for Women

In line with the observance of Fire Prevention Month, the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) successfully conducted a Basic Firefighting and Earthquake Drill and Seminar for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) students. This was initiated by the Education and Training Program, led by CO1 Rechel P Inday, to enhance emergency preparedness and ensure prison safety through organized evacuation and response procedures.

The seminar was facilitated by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) from the Mauway Fire Sub-Station, with a team of experienced fire officers including SFO2 Christopher L Cagol, FO3 Neufito Dominguez Jr., FO2 Albert B Dominguez, FO1 Crister Vincent Jamandron, and FO1 Patrick Jay Sumagaysay.

A total of 102 PDL students from Alternative Learning System (ALS), Vocational Technology (VocTech), Senior High School, and Theater Arts programs actively participated in the event. SFO2 Cagol led an informative lecture discussing the causes of fire, fire behavior, the fire tetrahedron, heat transfer, and stages of fire development. FO1 Jamandron followed with a demonstration on the proper use of fire extinguishers and the various methods of fire extinguishment.

The highlight of the day was the earthquake drill, which took place at the Maximum Inner Court. Participants practiced the essential phases of an earthquake response: alarm, response, evacuation, assembly, and headcount. The BFP team also conducted a hands-on fire suppression exercise where selected PDLs applied their newly acquired skills.

The event concluded with the distribution of refreshments provided by the BFP team, with assistance from CO1 Nazrene Maskay and CO1 Christina Timaot. As a gesture of appreciation, the CIW awarded the BFP team with a token and certificate of appreciation for their valuable contribution.

CT/SUPT MARJORIE ANN P SANIDAD, MD, RN, FIAMS, Acting Superintendent, supports this collaborative effort between BuCor and BFP, which not only equips participants with life-saving skills but also underscores the importance of proactive disaster preparedness, reinforcing the commitment to maintaining safety and security within the institution.
