In celebration of Philippine Arbor Day, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) joined the tree-planting activity conducted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on June 25, 2024, at the Kaliwa River Forest Reserve in Tanay, Rizal.
The Kaliwa River Forest Reserve (KRFR) is protected under the National Integrated Protected Areas System. According to DENR, the KRFR is home to various endangered wildlife species, such as the Northern Philippine hawk-eagle, Philippine Brown Deer, Philippine Warty Pig, and the Northern Rufous Hornbill. It is also the habitat of the critically endangered Philippine Eagle, a species endemic to the Philippines.
Thirty-two BuCor personnel, led by CSO2 Quirico A Aligaga, attended the tree-growing activity, along with representatives from the Local Government Units of Tanay, Rizal, DENR, A Brown Company, Alternergy Tanay Wind Corp., Youth Organizations, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Philippine Army, Philippine Airforce, Philippine National Police, and other stakeholders.
In their commitment to biodiversity, the participants planted 3,000 seedlings of various tree species, including 1,300 Narra, 500 Molave, 300 Kalumpit, 300 Banaba, 200 Palosapis, 200 Bitaog, and 200 Kawayang Tinik—the activity aimed to promote environmental awareness and contribute to the conservation of the forest reserve.
The tree-planting activity is a collective effort towards minimizing global warming and the extreme effects of pollution in the country, offering a hopeful future for our environment. It was part of BuCor’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The bureau has also implemented various programs and initiatives to protect and preserve the environment within its facilities and surrounding areas.
