On 30 June 2025, the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) took a significant step forward in advancing its reformation and livelihood initiatives through the ceremonial turnover of an innovative handloom weaving machine from the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI). The event marked the formal transfer of the DOST-PTRI handloom machine to CIW’s Work and Livelihood Program under its Reformation Section.
This milestone event was attended by C/CSUPT CELSO S BRAVO, Deputy Director General for Reformation, CT/SUPT MARJORIE ANN P SANIDAD, MD, RN, FIAMS, Acting Superintendent of CIW, along with other CIW officials and personnel. Key figures from the DOST were present, led by MR. OSCAR B. SEVILLA JR., Officer-in-Charge of DOST-NCR, MS. ZAILLA PAYAG, Officer-in-Charge of DOST-PTRI, as well as MS. MIKAELA TEVES, representing the Samahan ng mga Pilipina para sa Reporma at Kaunlaran (SPARK), a key partner in the initiative.
SPARK, a non-government organization advocating for women’s rights and development, was instrumental in bridging partnerships that led to this initiative. Their involvement reflects a broader goal of promoting gender-responsive and human rights-based approaches within correctional programs.
The ceremony highlighted the shared commitment of CIW, DOST, and SPARK in promoting inclusive reformation through innovation and skill development. The introduction of the handloom weaving machine is expected to strengthen the livelihood capabilities of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs), equipping them with textile and weaving skills that are both practical and income-generating.
