CIW PDLs share Stories through Art Therapy

On 5 April 2025, the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW), through its Education and Training Program, successfully conducted the second batch of the “Art Therapy Session” aimed at promoting emotional healing and self-expression among Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs). The session was facilitated by CO1 Rechel P Inday and CO1 Nazrene F Maskay, and led by trained artist and Kapit-Kulay Foundation Founder, Miss Kimberly Ann V. Lim.

With the theme “Ang Mukha sa Likod ng Ngiti”, the session encouraged participants to reflect on the contrast between how they are perceived externally and their true inner selves. A total of 50 PDLs from various dormitories took part in the activity, which allowed them to paint freely without instruction, creating an open environment for authentic expression.

Each participant shared the personal stories behind their artwork, revealing the deeper meanings of their pieces and the emotional struggles they often conceal behind smiles. Many recounted how society tends to judge them based on their past and appearance, often overlooking their genuine character and emotional depth.

Miss Lim also announced that the artworks will be featured in an upcoming exhibit organized by the Kapit-Kulay Foundation. She further expressed her commitment to return and extend the art therapy program to another 100 PDL, recognizing the profound impact of creative expression in rehabilitation.

The activity was made possible through the continuous support of CIW Superintendent, CT/SUPT MARJORIE ANN P SANIDAD, MD, RN FIAMS, who has consistently championed programs that prioritize the emotional well-being and personal development of PDL under her care. Her unwavering encouragement continues to foster a compassionate and rehabilitative environment within the institution.
